Transactional Equal Justice Program Launches Business Start-Up and Estate Planning Pro Bono Clinics

McDermott Will & Emery law partner Michael Bruno is the Chair and Founder of the Legal Services Transactional Equal Justice Program--a pro bono project whose mission is to give back to the community by providing transactional pro bono opportunities for private attorneys. Bruno explains his passion for the program as follows: “As a transactional attorney, I often felt overwhelmed stepping into a courtroom and advocating a case outside my area of my expertise. My goal was to create a program offering transactional pro bono services to encourage transactional attorneys to join with me and participate in giving back to the community.”

Bruno spearheaded a group of attorneys who, in partnership with Legal Services, brainstormed and developed the Transactional Equal Justice Program. The program organizes pro bono clinics which are well suited for attorneys specializing in tax, corporate law, estate planning, and intellectual property. These new avenues to equal justice are incredible opportunities for transactional attorneys who desire more pro bono options within the realm of their legal skill set.

At the Business Start-Up Clinic, pro bono attorneys give free legal advice to non-profits and low-to-moderate income small business owners, helping them to launch a business. At the Estate Planning Clinics, pro bono attorneys provide clarity to those needing end of life planning and help preserving home ownership in minority communities.
