Twenty years ago, Peari Begam legally arrived in the United States from Bangladesh. Her U.S. Citizen son had petitioned for her to come to live with him after her husband passed away. Unfortunately, her son unexpectedly passed away shortly thereafter, leaving her on her own. Now 75 years old, Ms. Begam suffers from Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease--both disabling conditions which prevent her from working. With help from Legal Services, Ms. Begam was able to naturalize. As a U.S. Citizen, she is now eligible for Social Security benefits that will provide her with a much needed safety net.
