Crisis Response Through Pro Bono
The COVID-19 pandemic has created an overwhelming burden on the economy. Small business owners and nonprofit agencies were hit extremely hard as most lacked the infrastructure and reserves necessary to sustain business operations while complying with mandated safety closures. Legal Services of Greater Miami’s Pro Bono Unit recruited several law firms to provide a full range of pro bono services for our small business and nonprofit clients impacted by COVID. Pro bono legal services ranged from consultations to full representation in a variety of legal areas.
Government mandated closures impacted the restaurant industry significantly. In tourist driven South Florida, restaurants are disappearing daily. As a minority female president to a family owned business in Opa-Locka, *Cynthia and her family had already overcome adversity prior to the pandemic. However, like many small family-owned businesses in the restaurant industry COVID closures challenged Cynthia and her family more than they ever could have planned.
Thanks to Greenberg Traurig’s commitment to pro bono and dedication to affording clients the best services, Cynthia’s family business is thriving and providing economic stability for its employees and neighborhood. When Jessica Johnson Fishfeld was asked by her co-worker to take Cynthia’s case for full representation, Jessica did not hesitate or waste any time putting her well known litigation skills to task.
Jessica relayed that “Cynthia was very distressed when I met her, because the business she runs is her family’s livelihood. I was able to negotiate a favorable settlement that was acceptable to my client and the opposition. This settlement will allow her to get out from under debt while maintaining her business. She was crying with happiness when I shared the great news with her! It was a very rewarding experience, and I am so pleased that I was able to help.
I am passionate about supporting and empowering female business owners and professionals, so it was a pleasure to do my part to help this client and her promising business.”
Jessica's enthusiasm saved a family of five's business and their economic future. Thank you, Jessica, for having a dynamic ripple effect in our community!
*Cynthia's name was changed to protect the privacy of her family and the business.
